5 tips to stay healthy this winter
Temperatures have dropped and the days are becoming shorter. Here are 5 tips to stay healthy this winter:
1. Eat in season and limit sugar
Fall and winter seasons are a great time for squash varieties and other root vegetables. They are grounding and warming. Try roasting root vegetables or making warming stews, soups or bone broths. Also cut back sugar and processed foods which will help keep your immune system strong during the flu season.
2. Hydrate
Hydration is key in boosting your immune system. Aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. Start every morning with a big glass of water, preferably warm lemon water. This will help wake up and stimulate your digestive system. Electrolytes and broths are also a great way to hydrate more deeply, and encourage absorption during these cold months.
3. Gentle movement every day
Go for a light morning walk or practice some gentle stretching or yoga at home. Integrate movement into your daily routine by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking farther away at the grocery store.
4. Schedule “me time”
Winter is a great time to start to embrace internal reflection, slow down and make time for daily relaxation. Take a bath, start a new book, go for a walk, or enjoy some tea (echinacea tea is great for building your immune system). Do something you love just for you, everyday, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
5. Sleep at least 7-8 hours each night
Set a regular bed time and wake up time for each day of the week, including weekends. Commit to no technology 90 minutes before bed. If this seems impossible, start with 10 minutes and work your way up. Aim to enjoy your caffeine before noon each day and prioritize morning light to encourage your natural circadian rhythm. These will all help support sleep that is more deep and restorative.
